Jon Stewart had Doris Kearns-Goodwin on The Daily Show after her book came out and as a long time admirer of Abraham Lincoln and with the hub-bub of the election brewing I bought and stacked it in my "to be read" pile. It was an excellent purchase and a valuable read for any student of 19th century American history.
Kearns-Goodwin has an elucidating style that is easy to read and reflects her thorough research of the subject matter. I have never seen in one place so complete a reconstruction of a society's moral, economic and political fiber as Kearns-Goodwin presents in this tome. The twists and turns of each political manuever, each battle leaves you feeling as though the outcome is already determined history. This sense of direct interest and involvement reflects the author's gift for story telling and left me eager to pursue her other biographical works on presidents Johnson, Kennedy and Roosevelt.
